Overview

This handcrafted masterpiece may be small, but it excels in creativity and functionality. Built on a tight budget, we achieved multiple unique finishes throughout the dwelling and maximised usable floor space by creating a multi-purpose mezzanine level. This space can serve as a bedroom, study, second living area, or even simple storage.
In line with the theme of using natural materials and keeping costs low, elements of cabinetry were handcrafted on-site. A standout feature is the concrete benchtops, which were formed and poured in place, complete with waterfall ends. This design creates a significant visual impact while remaining budget-friendly. The theme continues in the laundry and bathroom, where the clever use of natural timber and micro-cement, along with a thoughtfully designed freestanding bath and shower bordered by rocks, creates a striking effect without stretching the budget. The waterproofing detail for this design element is a fine example of collaboration with external consultants, ensuring that the vision is both practical and meets the requirements of the building surveyor.
A minimalist electrical design features hidden LED strip lighting and in-slab heating that complement the exposed concrete floor. Externally, this ancillary building harmoniously integrates with the main farmhouse and is ideally situated on the land. It boasts locally sourced Tasmanian oak shiplap cladding and a large, sweeping deck designed for enjoying the views of the serene Huon Valley hills and ranges.
Safety was a top priority during the external works, particularly due to the steep and challenging roof pitch. Scaffolding and custom access platforms were constructed to ensure the safety of all users. Safe access was maintained internally for nearly the entire duration of the project, designed carefully to avoid obstructing any of the various trades involved.
In addition to the dwelling, we constructed a special retreat almost entirely from off-cut materials, which includes an outdoor wood-fired spa and a connecting sauna room. Other external elements consist of a large, functional storage shed connected to the dwelling by a “fit for purpose” locally sourced gravel driveway, accommodating multiple vehicles, trailers, boats, and anything else that may need to be stored over time.

Overall, the home meets every element of the clients’ needs and provides them with a perfect getaway and or retreat for fast-aging children while offering more than many modern homes. The project was self-funded by the clients, and the work was completed under a cost-plus contract. Although the contracted amount was $255000.00, the clients successfully completed the works for $240000.00, which is an outstanding result for all involved. The finished product speaks for itself. The clients couldn’t be happier with the final result, the communication, and the adaptation shown by the CBC team to accommodate their values, all while exploring natural products and new construction methods and focusing on their investment goals. This project was delivered on time and under budget, providing another fabulous client experience!
