Award-Winning Custom Home Renovations in Hobart
Master Builders Tasmania Renovation Award Winners
Why Hobart Homeowners Choose CBC for Renovations
Renovating an existing home is a different discipline to building a new one. On a new build, the site tells you most of what you need to know. On a renovation, the important information is behind cladding, under floors, and inside walls that haven’t been opened in thirty years.
The builders who get renovations wrong are usually the ones who quote what they can see and discover the rest at your expense. We work the other way around.
Our Renovation Record Speaks for Itself
CBC has been recognised by Master Builders Tasmania in renovation categories every year for the past three years:
We were also the 2024 People’s Choice Award winner, which is voted on rather than judged. That one means a great deal to us, because it comes from the people who actually lived through our builds.
No Surprises at Invoice Time
Older Hobart homes hide a predictable set of issues: poorly installed cladding, trapped condensation, failed waterproofing, and structural timber that has quietly been getting wet for years.
On Hakea, our renovation in Tolmans Hill, our initial site inspection identified direct-fix cement sheet cladding installed over foil-backed paper on a house built as recently as 2014. We raised it before contracts were signed, explained to the owners exactly what it meant, and set out how we’d fix it. It added a significant amount to our initial estimate, and we said so up front rather than discovering it conveniently later.
We were right. Once we opened up the walls we found saturation, mould and the beginnings of rot behind the cladding, caused by condensation with no ventilation path whatsoever. We also found a substantial water leak in the existing ensuite that had compromised an external wall and part of the support structure for the living area.
The owners were disappointed, understandably. But they weren’t ambushed, and they weren’t paying for it twice.
Making Old Homes Breathe
This is the single most important thing happening in Tasmanian building right now, and most renovators aren’t across it.
For years the industry chased watertightness. Seal the house, keep the weather out. What we’ve learned is that a completely sealed home with out correct products can’t breathe, so moisture generated inside has nowhere to go and the building slowly rots from within. Mould and breathability are the biggest issues in Southern Tasmanian housing.
Our approach on renovations is to keep water out while deliberately engineering ventilation back in — permeable products, battened cavities, mechanical ventilation where the roof design leaves no other option. It’s largely invisible work that doesn’t show up in photographs. It’s also the difference between a renovation that lasts and one that looks good for a few years.
We Bring You Into the Decisions
When plans and reality diverge on a renovation site — and they always do — we present options rather than making the choice for you and explaining afterwards.
At Hakea, the existing land contours made the retaining wall for the new extension a genuine problem for connecting cleanly to the terraced backyard. Rather than picking the easiest solution, we put the option to the owners: extend the retaining wall to full height, remove the breaks in the vertical wall, and keep usable floor space in the connecting rooms. They chose it. It was their house and their money.
Renovations Finished On Time
Disruption is the part of renovating people underestimate. You’re often paying a mortgage and rent simultaneously, and every week of overrun costs you twice.
Hakea was contracted for handover in February 2025. We completed the full scope, including variations, and handed over in mid-December with all certifications finalised, which got the family out of their short-term lease and into their home before Christmas.
We plan for the logistics too. The Hakea site had a long off-street driveway in the middle of a cul-de-sac, meaning constant vehicle shuffling for material deliveries. We identified it during preliminary pricing and built the additional access cost into the budget rather than issuing a variation for it later.

FEATURED RENOVATION PROJECTS
Our Renovations in Hobart
Extensions, additions and whole-home transformations across Southern Tasmania
HAKEA – TOLMANS HILL
AWARD WINNER: Master Builders Tasmania 2025 Finalist
A growing family needed more space, and got a new parents’ wing with master bedroom, study and ensuite, plus an expanded living area where an unused second deck had been. Behind the scenes, this project became a masterclass in renovation risk management: failed cladding, hidden water damage, saturated external walls and a compromised support structure, all identified and rectified properly. Delivered two months ahead of the contracted handover date.
ROSLYN – BLACKMANS BAY
A tired single-storey concrete block home from the 1970s, reimagined as an upper-class beach shack. Complete rework of the lower level plus a 70m² upstairs addition, taking the home to four bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms with a library. Silvertop Ash timber features inside and out, and the existing floors sanded and sealed rather than replaced.
DERWENT WATER – SANDY BAY
A 55m² extension with renovation to the existing lower floor, on a site with almost no on-street parking. Large-scale excavation at the rear required coordination with council, traffic control and neighbours. The redesigned driveway gained a turning bay, and a double carport now sits beneath the extended kitchen and entertainment deck. Steel and Spotted Gum tie the new work seamlessly into the original structure.
LANSDOWNE – WEST HOBART
A quaint West Hobart family home transformed into a modern, sunny escape. Two bathrooms, a bedroom and the kitchen fully renovated, with the living area opened up behind chapel-style floor-to-ceiling windows. Existing problems uncovered at the start of works were dealt with properly before the renovation proper began.
AUBURN – HOBART
Master Builders Tasmania 2024 Winner — Renovation/Addition under $200,000
A luxury pool pavilion with a 6-metre swim spa, outdoor kitchen with in-line gas BBQ, outdoor shower and powder room, framed by mountain views. Proof that an addition doesn’t need to be large to be exceptional.
“When work began on our house, challenging existing problems were identified that had to be dealt with before the renovations could start. Extra people were made available to make up time. Chris and the team were reassuring, polite, kept the site tidy and always happy to talk to us about progress. At all times we were kept informed, decisions were made together, and options were provided on how to go forward.
People often say they aren’t happy at the end of their renovations. Not only are we extremely happy with the quality of the work undertaken by CBC Custom Building, we are grateful that during some dark times when problems with our property were identified, Chris and his team were always able to find a solution and make it happen.”

Frequently Asked Questions About Home Renovations in Hobart
What does a custom home renovation cost in Hobart?
Honestly, it depends entirely on scope, and anyone who quotes you a figure before seeing your home is guessing. What we can tell you is the shape of the work we do: our recent renovation projects have ranged from additions under $200,000 through to whole-home renovations and extensions in the $400,000 to $850,000 range and beyond.
Rather than guess, we produce a Feasibility Study. It sets out the expected cost of your project including external consultants, and explains exactly how we charge and why. You get a realistic number before you’re committed, not after.
What happens if you find problems once work starts?
We try very hard to find them before work starts. Our site discovery process is deliberately thorough, and where we identify likely issues we tell you before contracts are signed, even when it makes our estimate less competitive than the builder down the road.
When something genuinely unexpected does emerge, we stop, explain what we’ve found and how it happened, and present you with options. You make the call.
Should we renovate or knock down and rebuild?
This is exactly the conversation to have with us before you spend money on a designer. Sometimes the existing structure is sound and a renovation delivers far more for the money. Sometimes what’s already there is compromised enough that you’re better off starting again.
A large amount of construction plans in Tasmania never get built, largely because people design first and discover the cost second. We’d rather have an honest conversation with you at the beginning than watch you spend $30,000 to $70,000 on plans for something that doesn’t stack up.
Can we live in the house during the renovation?
Sometimes, depending on the scope and which parts of the home are affected. For substantial renovations involving the kitchen, bathrooms or structural work, most families move out. We’ll be straight with you about this during the planning stage, because where you’ll live and what it will cost you is part of your real budget, not a detail to sort out later. We plan our programmes with your handover date in mind for exactly this reason.
Our home is old and has damp or mould issues. Can you help?
Yes, and this is an area we’ve deliberately built expertise in. Condensation and poor ventilation are the most common underlying problems in Southern Tasmanian homes, and they’re frequently misdiagnosed as leaks.
We use permeable products, battened cavities and mechanical ventilation where necessary to give moisture a way out, alongside comprehensive waterproofing where water needs to be kept out. Fixing the symptom without fixing the cause just delays the problem.
How long does a home renovation take in Hobart?
Most substantial renovations and extensions run between four and twelve months depending on scope, though this varies considerably with structural work, council requirements and what we find once we open things up.
We give you a realistic timeline during planning and we work to it. Hakea, our recent Tolmans Hill renovation, was contracted for a February handover and we delivered it in mid-December.
Do you work with architects and designers on renovations?
Yes, and we welcome it. We also add value during the design stage by flagging practical and structural issues before they become expensive. Our best outcomes come from being brought in early, while changes are still cheap to make.
What areas of Hobart do you renovate in?
Throughout Southern Tasmania. Recent renovation work includes Tolmans Hill, Sandy Bay, West Hobart, Bellerive, Lindisfarne, Kingston, Blackmans Bay and Mornington, and we work across Hobart’s established suburbs where most of the housing stock that benefits from renovation is located.
